Job Description
A PhD position in Human Immunology is available at Federation University Australia. Prof
Stuart Berzins will be the primary supervisor of this project, which will be based at the University’s Mt
Helen campus near Ballarat, but is likely to involve semi-regular visits to collaborators in Melbourne and
elsewhere. Project opportunities exist in areas of developmental immunology (unconventional T cell development), and in a project studying why aged individuals have a higher risk from COVID-19 and
whether we can develop new ways to identify and protect vulnerable individuals before they are infected.
The biomedical laboratories at Fed Uni are well equipped with a 15 colour Fortessa flow cytometer and all
necessary infrastructure for cellular and molecular immunology research. A tax free 3 year Research
Training Scholarship (with potential 6mo extension) will be provided at current rates ($33k p.a.) with a
laptop computer and support for attending conferences and seminars provided. Please contact Prof Berzins

Required Skills
Candidates should have an Honours (Class 1 or 2a) or Masters degree in a relevant
biomedical discipline. Experience in immunology techniques such as flow cytometry, tissue culture and
functional/molecular assays would be an advantage, but are not essential as training will be provided.
